About vitamin D:
Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin upon exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. This synthesis, however, depends on latitude, season, time of day, age, use of sunscreens and skin pigmentation (IOM, 1997).
In Canada, vitamin D synthesis by the skin is insufficient during the winter months (October to March). Unless you consume very large amounts of certain foods, it is virtually impossible to meet the recommended intake of vitamin D without the help of supplements.
Health Canada specifically recommends that all adults over 50 take a minimum supplement of 25 mcg (1000 IU) of vitamin D daily for the prevention of osteoporosis and certain autoimmune diseases. Taking a vitamin D supplement is also recommended by the Canadian Cancer Society.
